Belgium has joined the growing list of countries that considered video game loot boxes a form of unauthorized gambling.

 

The government gave game developers a way out to avoid criminal liability.

The Belgian Gaming Commission (BGC) ruled that the paid loot boxes in some games can be considered as “games of chance.” BGC director Peter Naessens warned that paid loot boxes “are not an innocent part of video games that present themselves as games of skill. Players are seduced and deceived by it and none of the protective measures for gambling are applied.” Authorities said that video game developers should eliminate the boxes or face fines of up to €800k and five years in prison.
