The Story

Chancellor Philip Hammond has taken the advice of an “expert” and approved the slashing of the FOBT stake to £2, according to reports.

The government will stand to lose millions with the proposal.

The UK Gambling Commission has proposed that a £30 or less maximum stake be imposed in order to combat the risk of harm. But Hammond's ill-advised decision will cost the state millions. The MPs had been warned that too-low maximum stakes on FOBTs will result in more than 4,500 betting shops closing down, causing an estimated 21,000 people to be out of jobs by 2020.
