62-year old wins £125k after grandson takes the pitch for Wales

harry-wilsonTalk about the gift of foresight, 62-year old Peter Edwards just might just have that ability.

The grandfather of 16-year old football dynamo Harry Wilson won himself an impressive £125,000 after the Liverpool academy star took the pitch for Wales as part of a World Cup qualifier against Belgium last week. Notwithstanding the fact that Wilson became the youngest player to ever represent Wales in a football international, his entry into the match also allowed his proud grandpa to cash in on a 13-year old bet that Harry, then only 18 months, would one day represent his country in a football match.

Incredible as that story sounds, it’s also telling reminder that maybe, grandfathers do know best, or in this case, have the ability to accurately predict what their grandchild would grow up to be.

Edwards made the bet back in 2000 at a William Hill betting shop in Wrexham, putting down £50 that Harry would play for Wales at odds of 2,500-1. Fast forward to last Tuesday and Edwards’ prediction finally came to fruition when he proudly saw his 16-year old grand son entered the Welsch football record books.

With his new-found riches, Edwards, who apparently wrks away from home most of the year as an electrical contractor, decided to hang up his day job in lieu of the proceeds he stood to get from his winning bet, much to the delight of his 58-year old wife, Dorothy.

“She is over the moon,” Edwards told the Irish Mirror. “I retired immediately. I told my manager yesterday that if Harry plays I wouldn’t be coming back.”

“I’ve retired one year early. I have come home now and will not be going back. Not bad for a daft bet.”

Not bad, indeed, Mr. Edwards.

Maybe you can tell us little Prince George has a shot at representing England in 20 years’ time.
