The Story
The Austrian parliament has opened its investigation on the alleged collusion of government officials with gambling operator Novomatic Group. The scandal started when Casinos Austria named Peter Sidlo as its new chief financial officer. Sidlo, a key ally of Austria’s former vice chancellor Heinz-Christian Strache, was criticized for lacking the qualifications for his new role. Novomatic was involved in the affair because it needs to give its approval in order for Sidlo to be appointed, being a major Casinos Austria stakeholder. In exchange for Sidlo’s appointment, Novomatic is said to regain its land-based slots licenses and reenter Austria’s online gambling market.
