The Story
A major anti-illegal gambling drive in Bangladesh yielded the arrest of more than 300 individuals, including Khalid Mahmud Bhuiyan, a youth leader of the country’s ruling Awami League Party. Authorities raided five establishments in the capital city of Dhaka and arrested 182 individuals involved in illegal casino operations. In a raid at the popular Youngmen’s Club, 142 people were also arrested. Police seized a variety of gambling paraphernalia, alcohol, illegal drugs, a few firearms and an undisclosed amount of cash. Opposition Bangladesh Nationalist Party pounced on the opportunity to slam the government for allegedly turning Dhaka into a “gambling and sin city.”
