The Story

Macau casinos posted stronger than expected gaming revenue growth in April, thanks to solid gains in both the VIP and mass market gaming segments.

Analysts were stumped by the numbers.

Casinos generated gaming revenue MOP25.7b (US$3.2b) in April, a month when casinos traditionally post lower gaming revenues. This year’s figure is a 27.6% improvement over the same month last year. According to Union Gaming analyst Grant Govertsen, April’s average daily revenue of MOP858m was on par with results seen during the most recent Lunar New Year and Golden Week holiday periods. Union Gaming expects that Macau casinos will grow by 22% in Q2.
