The leader has to be practical and a realist yet must talk the
language of the visionary and the idealist.

The Story

Cash-strapped France is set to privatize the state-run lottery and betting operator Française des Jeux (FDJ) via an initial public offering.

This is the French government’s way to make fast money.

The government plans to make the FDJ public in 2019, selling 50% of its total 72% stake to investors. Offering the FDJ to the public is part of a privatization framework where the government is expected to raise a total of around €10b. As part of the process, a regulatory body that will ensure that the FDJ will continue its adherence to government policies will be instituted. With total sales of around €15.1b in 2017, FDJ is the second largest lottery operator in Europe behind Italy’s Lottomatica.
