Alberto Contador and his Astana team wheeled around Paris yesterday afternoon, the Spaniard clutching the traditional flute of champagne as he celebrated a perfect summer for the sport in his country. Contador’s victory may have been slightly controversial, though you can’t fault the man who has now won three Tours. Englishman Mark Cavendish won the final sprint stage but came up just short of the green jersey for points, Alessandro Petacchi taking home the pancetta for Italy.
The final day should have been more exciting than this though, surely? Contador becoming too intoxicated, seeing the Luxembourgian Andy Schleck pass him by to the 2010 title, while he rolls around in the gutter laughing like a drunken school-girl. That would have been a Tour to remember. Read more.
