Mohegan Sun isn’t giving up its bid for a casino license in Massachusetts despite losing a referendum a few weeks ago to build its establishment in Palmer, Massachusetts. The company even went so far as to ask for a recount of the votes, which saw its proposal lose by just 93 votes during the November 5 vote.
Well, Mohegan Sun. You got what you asked for.
A recount of those votes is expected to be done today and Mohegan Sun is hoping that the supposed glitches that happened during the initial vote would be addressed to show that it had actually won the vote to build a casino in Palmer.
“There were some technical problems with the voting in precinct two,” the Mohegan Tribal Gaming Authority said immediately after the outcome, as quoted by WWLP.com. “They are very, very troubling to us and we will be asking the town of Palmer for a hand recount of the ballots in today’s election and the town is considering that on their own as well”.
The recount started at the Palmer library at around 9 am and as expected, challenges surfaced during the whole proceedings, causing a stop in the process at one point.
No announcement of the recount was made, although one is expected to happen sometime today.
Make no mistake, a lot is riding on this recount, especially for Mohegan Sun. If it wins this time, it’s proposal is back on the table. If it loses, we see no other way for the company to keep its bid alive, leaving MGM Resorts International as the only one left in the running for the Western Massachusetts casino license. It’s hardly surprising that, according to The Republican, MGM’s lawyer, Brian Fitzgerald, was present to watch the recount proceedings.
Perhaps he’s there to check that the whole process is on the up-and-up?
