Nicky Henderson’s Binocular has been ruled out of this weeks’ Cheltenham Festival after testing positive for a legal substance in the lead up to the first day’s racing.
Binocular was one of the bookie’s favorites for tomorrow’s Champion Hurdle and as such a significant amount had already been wagered on Henderson’s horse.
It’s widely thought that the news was known for some three days before it came out yesterday and that the British Horseracing Authority and Henderson chose not to make the news public
Yesterday’s news has rocked one of the showpieces of the week and means that punters will be looking for a new favorite in the event.
In sports book news, William Hill has announced the appointment of a new non-executive director from early next month.
David Lowden will be taking up the position with immediate effect from 1 April 2011 after a distinguished career that has seen him work for a number of reputable international companies.
Gareth Davis, Chairman of William Hill, commented, “I am delighted that David Lowden has agreed to join the William Hill Board. His extensive experience with international companies will be an asset to the Group as we pursue an agenda of innovation and international development.
“On behalf of the Board, I would like to thank David Allvey for his many years’ service to William Hill. His contribution has been invaluable during a period of significant development for the Group from its flotation through the Stanley acquisition, which made William Hill the UK’s number one bookmaker, to the establishment and development of William Hill Online.”
Lowden replaces the outgoing David Allvey who is taking retirement.
