It’s becoming increasingly clear that unless there is some sort of shake-up soon the UK’s horseracing industry is destined to go the way of the dodo. A meeting is to take place later this week in which the racing industry will try to take the bookmakers to task over the steep decline in their payments into the annual levy – but if the bookies are moving abroad, where they are exempt from such payments, what do you expect them to say, apart from sayonara?
The fact is that the bookies will always find something to bet on, with or without the nags, so it is racing that is up shit creek without a paddle, unless the government steps in and closes the loopholes those pesky bookies are exploiting. Read more.
