The Story
British Columbia Attorney General David Eby has announced the establishment of a new Independent Gambling Control Office (IGCO) by spring of 2021. The IGCO will replace the Gaming Policy and Enforcement Branch (GPEB), a body that was hit for its dual roles that seem to contradict each other. GPEB is supposed to keep tab on gaming rules but it cannot do that as it is also tasked to simultaneously advise the province on business matters. This problematic dual role of the GPEB was highlighted in the money laundering scandal that rocked the province a few years ago.
