EA VP of legal and government affairs Kerry Hopkins told the UK’s Digital, Culture, Media, and Sports committee that loot boxes in popular EA titles were “quite ethical and quite fun, quite enjoyable to people.” Hopkins likened the loot boxes, which contain randomly selected virtual goods purchased with cash or virtual currency, to the mystery-toy-inside-chocolate Kinder Joy Egg product. The executive also denied that there is evidence that shows loot boxes lead to gambling” and these are unethical.
