The Story

The Law Commission of India has advised the government to legalize gambling and betting in order to profit from the industry which has long been existing underground and untaxed.

If you can’t beat them, join them.

In its report, ‘Legal Framework: Gambling and Sports Betting including Cricket in India,’ LCI noted that since it is not possible for the Indian government to “prevent these activities completely, effectively regulating them remains the only viable option.” The commission said that the parliament should enact laws that would not only allow individual states the right to opt out of legal gambling within their respective borders but also restrict problem gambling and fight money laundering.

In legalizing gambling, the commission said the government will generate revenue to fund public welfare initiatives, create more jobs, and invite more tourists to visit the country.
