The Story

Switzerland has voted in favor of allowing local casinos to offer online gambling while blocking the domains of internationally licensed gambling operators.

The vote is a victory for local casinos.

On Sunday, 72.9% of Swiss voters who showed up cast their vote in favor of their country’s new gambling law which is set to take effect in 2019. The new law will grant land–based casinos the right to expand their operations online, while gambling sites that won’t partner with local casinos will be closed. It was the older voters who took the ‘Yes’ votes to victory, as they were swayed by the claims that allowing international sites continued access to the market would hamper the government’s ability to fund social programs.
