The Story

The profits of UK gambling operator Rank Group took a dive in the first quarter of 2018 as the bitter winter winds prevented punters from going to their casinos and bingo halls.

Rank's digital unit has saved the day.

The company reported that its like-for-like revenue dropped by 2% in the first three months of 2018. Two factors contributed to the Rank's revenue decline: “weaker than expected visits” due to the cold weather and their high-rollers getting lucky in their bets. The only good news is that Rank's UK digital unit posted a 17% growth in its revenue. The decrease in its casino and gaming revenue forced the group's board to lower its full-year operating profit from £84.5 million to between £76 million ($107 million) and £78 million for the year ending June 30.
