Disney—the company that brought your childhood dreams to life—is now the one crushing the dreams of those who want to have gambling expanded in Florida.

I thought so too. But apparently, the media giant covertly orchestrated a plan to prevent gambling expansion in Florida by funneling thousands of dollars to a political committee named “Voters in Charge.” Disney Worldwide Services, a company under the Walt Disney brand, gave $200,000 to the group last April.

But you have to start paying attention to them. According to its Facebook page, the Florida-based committee is leading a ballot initiative “to give Florida voters, not politicians, the exclusive right to approve or disapprove casino gambling.”

Me too. It is still a mystery as to why Disney is supporting the group. But what the state’s financial data revealed is that House of Mickey Mouse was the top donor in the group’s campaign last month. Recently, the proposal being pushed by the group is gaining traction, with the Florida Supreme Court supporting proposed state constitutional amendments on voter approval of new gambling.
