Fresh off last month’s pummeling of Antonio Margarito, bad ass boxer (and Filipino congressman) Manny Pacquiao will fight Sugar Shane Mosley for the WBO welterweight title at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas on May 7. Promoter Bob Arum is aware that he may have difficulty selling the drama of a contest between two fighters headed in opposite directions. Pacquiao (52-3-2, 38 KO’s) has won his last 13 fights, while Mosley (46-6-1, 39 KO’s) hasn’t won a fight in 2.5 years.
One of Mosley’s losses came last May at the gloves of Floyd Mayweather Jr., the guy who Manny would much rather be fighting – and the fight the boxing world would much rather witness. But Mayweather has chosen to stay well outside of Manny’s reach, preferring to trade (occasionally racist) verbal blows over the internet. Despite this, Mayweather has found time to (allegedly) take swings at a security guard and his own baby mama, with the end result that all his upcoming tilts are scheduled against prosecuting attorneys, not boxers.
Also not helping matters is the fact that Mayweather’s co-promoter, Golden Boy Promotions, is in a serious turf war with Arum’s Top Rank outfit. Our solution? Have Arum face Golden Boy CEO Richard Schaefer on the Pacquiao/Mayweather undercard. Sure, Arum’s like, a hundred years old or something, but we’ll give him the right to fire one Taser per round. Are you ready to rumble?
