The results of a new survey has revealed that prohibiting gambling in Thailand has backfired. In a survey by the Research Centre for Social and Business Development, 30.4m Thais (57% of the population) engaged in some form of gambling this year, around 1.5m higher than the last survey in 2017. The study showed that while the majority of Thai gamblers are “of working age,” around 733k (2.4% of the total) of those who gambled this year were aged 15-18 years-old. Betting on football remains the most popular option for Thai punters, followed by ‘underground lotteries.’ The state-run lottery, which has been unappealing to gamblers, was the third most popular option.
