The Story
In a surprise move, Las Vegas Sands announced that it will not be pursuing its bid to get an integrated resort (IR) license in Osaka. CEO Sheldon Adelson announced that the company believes that “an investment in Tokyo or Yokohama gives us the best opportunity” to drive organic growth and make it rain for Sands shareholders. The statement came just hours after Yokohama Mayor Fumiko Hayashi confirmed that the city might give out one of its maximum three IR licenses to save the government’s dire financial situation. Meanwhile, Tokyo’s government has refused to publicly state its desire of hosting an IR.
