The Story
A joint probe by The Age, The Sydney Morning Herald and 60 Minutes showed that Crown Resorts was involved in supposedly illegal activities in its pursuit to lure Chinese high-rollers to its Australian casino properties. The report was based on a leak of internal emails and statements by former Crown reps and government officials. The investigation linked Crown to The Company, an organized crime group run by Hong Kong triads, noting that the casino operator collaborated with junkets to evade China’s capital controls. Reception on the report was lukewarm as the much-hyped report failed to deliver on its promise to “shock the nation.” Meanwhile, Crown denied that it had broken any Chinese laws, while declining specific comments due to its ongoing involvement in a class suit.
