The Story

Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte has ordered the cancellation of a casino land deal between Hong Kong-listed casino investor Landing International Development Ltd. (LIDL) and Nayong Pilipino Foundation (NPF) which he claimed was “grossly disadvantageous” to the Philippine government.

Duterte terminates all NPF board members.

In a news conference, Philippine Presidential Spokesperson Harry Roque said that the president was furious about the decision of Nayong Pilipino executives to lease a government property for a “ridiculously long period of time of 70 years.” Last June, state auditors warned that the Philippine government could lose as much as PHP26b (US$486.2m) from the deal since LIDL would be underpaying the lease relative to the market value of the land at the nearby Solaire Resort and Casino.
