The Story

Australians will soon hear less gambling and betting advertisements on the radio as Commercial Radio Australia (CRA) planning to implement a ban on said ads during live sports events.

Tell me more about this.

The CRA said that the ban on gambling ads will start five minutes before and after the live sport events. It is only during the breaks in play when gambling ads will be allowed to be played.

What was the justification of this policy?

Joan Warner, chief executive officer of Commercial Radio Australia, only has this to say about the proposed changes: “The commercial radio industry continues to monitor and respond to community safeguards and is committed to providing quality radio in line with the Australian listening public’s needs.”

When will this take effect?

The ban is just a proposal for now. CRA said that they will still accept comments and responses to the proposal until December 15. If things go according to plan, the new rules will be implemented on March 18.

Takeaway

The move to ban gambling ads is just another step taken by Australia to restrict gambling in the country. The government earlier implemented a stricter enforcement of existing bans on online in-play betting, poker and casino products, and proposed a national point-of-consumption tax.
