Two weeks into the NFL season, online sports betting odds to win SuperBowl XLVIII have already been through the proverbial roller coaster.
In some respects, that kind of unpredictability is par for the course in the first couple of weeks in the NFL. Pre-season favorites falter out of the gate while unheralded teams jump out like gangbusters. Nothing like unpredictability to spruce up the start of pigskin season.
Where things remain status quo, though (at least for the time being) is the pre-season favorite to win the SuperBowl. The Denver Broncos retained the favorite status thanks to a pair of dominant wins against the defending champion Baltimore Ravens and the New York Giants. At 4/1 odds to raise the Lombardi Trophy at MetLife Stadium next February, Peyton Manning and Co. are looking like sharp bets at this point in the year.
Meanwhile, the Seattle Seahawks, who opened the year as third favorites to win at 15/2, have traded places with the team it trashed earlier this week, now taking second favorite status from the San Francisco 49ers at 11/2 odds.
Apart from the beatdown it received up in Seattle, the Niners shouldn’t be too bummed about losing out on the top two spots because they’re still third favorites at 9/1, down from the 8/1 line it had prior to the start of the season.
Like the 1-1 49ers, a pair of teams with similar records sit bundled up at 12/1 odds: the New England Patriots and the Green Bay Packers. Comparing the lines for both teams before the season began shows a story of two teams seemingly going in opposite directions. The Patriots were 17/2 then but have seen their line drop to 11/1 after a litany of injuries have robbed Tom Brady of a credible receiving corps.
On the flip side, the Aaron Rodgers and the Packers appear to be hitting their stride after stomping the Washington Redskins earlier this week and in doing so, dropped their line from the 11/1 odds that was originally set.
Some pretty big movers after two weeks include the New Orleans Saints, who opened at 20/1 only to see their line drop to 16/1 after a pair of impressive grind-it-out victories in the first two weeks of the season.
Meanwhile, the biggest positive jumps are attributed to the Miami Dolphins and the Kansas City Chiefs, two teams that began the year at a distant 50/1 odds. But after impressive showings in the first two weeks of the year, both teams have jumped to 33/1, not exactly favorites’ status, but significant nonetheless.
On the other end of the spectrum, a handful of teams saw their lines crater after two weeks of inconsistent and miserable play. The Dallas Cowboys and the New York Giants both opened at 22/1 only for both teams to find their line now sitting at 33/1 and 40/1, respectively.
