According to a recent poll, more than half of New Yorkers say they’ll back a Las Vegas style commercial casino in the state.The Quinnipiac University survey found 56 percent of registered voters said they’re in favor of casinos “similar to those in Atlantic City and Las Vegas,” with only 37 percent opposed.
Interestingly enough, the support was consistent across the state with 56 percent in New York City, 58 percent in the city’s suburbs, and 54 percent upstate all saying they’d like to see the state’s gaming industry expand.
Currenlty, New York already has a handful of casinos run by Indian tribes, but if Gov Cuomo was wondering whether New Yorkers wanted commercial gambling expansion in their state, he may have got a resounding answer.”YES”
Quinnipiac pollster Maurice Carroll said in a statement, “Roll the dice. Spin the wheel. Hit me. New Yorkers of every stripe say what stays in Vegas should stay in the Empire State as well.” – Democrat and Chronicle
Gov. Andrew Cuomo and his administration are currently in the process of developing a position on the legalization of commercial casino gaming with tentative plans to unveil it in January.
“It is an issue that we are looking at. We are studying it closely. It is a complex matter,” Cuomo said. “It has numerous ramifications on a number of levels, and we are working through it. We have no firm position and no firm plans on it.” – Democrat and Chronicle
