William Hill today announced that it has strengthened its links with Scottish football by becoming the title sponsor of the Scottish Cup. The “seven-figure deal” runs for three years and will mean the competition is named the William Hill Scottish Cup. The deal will reportedly net the Scottish FA Gareth Davis, Chairman of William Hill PLC, said: “It seems fitting for the most established and biggest bookmaker in Scotland to be attached to the oldest Association trophy in world football and we at William Hill consider it an honour to be able to put our name to the Scottish Cup.”
Bodog-sponsored Ayr United will enter the competition at the third round and look to emulate this week’s Cup giant killing of Inverness Caledonian Thistle.
Scotland’s luck was also present for one customer of Ladbrokes. Last weekend saw the first millionaire winner of their 49s lottery game. Stuart Smith, 58, scooped the jackpot at his local Ladbrokes ship and that was with just a £1 stake. The resident of Dumfries told the Daily Record, “I was jumping for joy when my numbers came up but I thought at first I’d only won £100,000.
“When they ran the bonus and I was the only one who had it for £1million, I was ecstatic. I went up the road and told my wife and she burst into tears.”
The obvious question put to Smith was how are you going to spend the money? A life time supply of battered Mars Bars? Free admission to every single Ayr United game? Not quite…
“We’ll probably invest some of it and I’ll buy myself a second-hand car.”
When we’re next up in Scotland it’s Special Brew on you Stevie!
