Italian domain name prices rise; Gambling Commission lengthens stay of commissioner

ItaliaItalian domain names have skyrocketed in value since the online casino market was regulated earlier this year. Blackjack.it has already sold to I-Promotions for €65,000 and that’s not even the tip of the iceberg. According to its owner, OnlineCasino.it is “for sale at a low six figure price in Euros” with the owner of OnlinePoker.it stating that his domain is for sale at a “price in Euros ranging in the mid 5 figures”.

It pales into insignificance when you compare it to the $5.5million Calvin Ayre spent on securing the Slots.com domain name. That kind of domain is a far more lucrative one than the ones being marketed here, down to the fact that Slots.com can easily be sexed up and is in its nature much more flexible. OnlineCasino or OnlinePoker are domains that are limited and it would be hard to move any values associated with the word. It would thus be harder to create a true brand from the domain – something that would be easier with a domain like Slots.com.

Peter Teague has been confirmed as the commissioner of the UK’s Gambling Commission. The Department for Culture Media and Sport (DCMS) announced that he began his second term on 1st September and that it will last for four years. The Commission is responsible for regulating the UK’s gambling market and is looking at a busy year with new gambling industry rules to be implemented fully by the government. Bodog is one of the first companies to pick up at full UK gambling commission license and is well placed to take advantage of this position.
