The Story
Ottawa Senators owner and one of Canada’s richest men Eugene Melnyk raised three possible defenses as to why he failed to settle his US$900k debt at the Mohegan Sun Casino in 2017—all three clearing him for any responsibility. First, Melynk said the casino delayed to cash out the drafts he issued, rendering them stale. Second, the Melnyk’s signatures on the drafts had a questionable appearance that might have raised doubts from his bankers. Third—and the more interesting defense—is that the casino “refused [Melnyk’s] instructions to cash out” his stacks of chips, after which Melnyk incurred “substantial losses.”
