The lack of FIFA World Cup action had a significant impact on the total lottery sales in China last July, the figures released by the Ministry of Finance showed. Total lottery sales in July reached RMB32.4b (US$4.53b), a 40.1% decline from the same month last year. Sports lottery sales contributed much to the decline, with July’s sales down 50.2% year-on-year to RMB17.7b. For the year-to-date, sports lottery sales are down 22.1% to RMB132.5b. Meanwhile, welfare lottery sales slid 21.3% to RMB15b, making sports lottery the dominant sector since April 2018.
