The Story | |||
China’s “ping-pong prince” has courted bad publicity abroad after a writ was filed in a Hong Kong court accusing two-time Olympic gold medal tennis table player Kong Linghui of failing to repay a six-figure marker drawn on an account at the Marina Bay Sands (MBS) Singapore. |
What happened? |
Kong, according to the writ, signed a S$1,000,000 (US $721,000) credit agreement with the casino in February 2015 which made him a premium player at MBS. While Kong eventually repaid over S$545,000 of his debt, he has yet to pay the remaining S$454,000. MBS is suing Kong for repayment plus interest. |
For an Olympian of his stature, he should be able to pay those debts easily. |
Yup. But Kong alleged that he was not the one who gambled all the money away at the casino but only provided his personal details to the casinos for to get chips for his family and friends. He also said that he only watched them play. |
Knowing China, he is sure to get slapped for this. |
With Beijing authorities taking a negative view on gambling, Kong already felt the repercussions of this incident. He was already suspended from coaching duties for China’s national women’s table tennis team. |
Takeaway |
Never let your family members use your name, especially if you are an Olympian and your reputation is at stake. More importantly, pay your debts! |
