The Story

The U.K. Gambling Commission has released its proposed changes to the licensing conditions and codes of practice for gambling operators, which include the imposition of heavier penalties against violators of advertising rules.

Erring operators will face the full force of law.

Some of the highlights of UKGC's proposed changes include the provision that licensees “must” comply with the advertising rules; that “licensees must ensure” marketing pitches on “free bet” offers are not misleading; and that all “significant conditions” of their free bet offers must be “provided transparently and prominently to consumers.” Under the proposed changes, violators will face the “full range of [the UKGC's] regulatory powers”—which could mean heftier fines and withdrawal of their ads.
