The Story

The UK Gambling Commission (UKGC) released a document which outlined its vision of ensuring “fairer and safer gambling” in the UK for the next three years.

How will they do that?

The UKGC laid out a five-pronged approach with protecting consumers’ interests as its priority. The said goal can be achieved in part by imposing “tougher and broader sanctions on operators (including lotteries) who fail to treat customers fairly and make gambling safe.”

And it seems they have walked the talk.

The UKGC showed that it is not fooling around when it ramped up its enforcement game this year, identifying regulatory shortcomings by and imposing hefty fines on Gala Interactive, Stan James Online, BGO Entertainment, lottery betting operator Lottoland and a record £7.8m knuckle-rapping of 888 Holdings in August.

You said something about a five-pronged plan. What are the other components?

The UKGC also wants to require operators to provide more information about the risks of gambling and better controls to manage gambling activity; ensure effective and independent arrangements to resolve consumer complaints and disputes; improve the UKGC’s own regulatory activity and; focus on “optimizing returns to good causes from lotteries.”

Should operators be worried?

If they continue to fall short of their responsibility to provide fair and safe gambling to their patrons, then they should.

Takeaway

The UKGC's five-pronged strategy, if implemented without prejudice to operators, seem to be a win-win move for both business owners and the patrons.
