The Story

A Russian government official had admitted defeat and said that domain-blocking is an inefficient way to deter citizens from online gambling.

Finally!

Russia’s Minister of Communications Nikolai Nikiforov told legislators in the State Duma that the rapid turnover of technology means that “the blocking method will not allow us to achieve the desired result, and technology will always be promptly designed for each lock, allowing it to be circumvented.”

How far did they go on domain-blocking?

Russia’s telecom watchdog Roskomnadzor is the poster child of blocking unapproved online gambling websites, adding 1,500 or more gambling-related domains each and every week. Nikiforov said such a system was “not viable.”

What will Russia do now?

Nikiforov now wants to target the users. He said that it would be better to “closely monitor who was searching for this or that information, access to this or that illegal content.” This confirms what Roskomnadzor has done last month, when it reached a deal with Russian search engines to hide from punters the information they need to access online gambling sites.

Also, there’s the still the ban on Virtual Private Networks.

That was the legislation signed by President Vladimir Putin last July. Earlier this month, Roskomndazor chief Alexander Zharov announced the formation of a special department to ensure the rules banning VPNs are obeyed.

Takeaway

If only Russia just legalize online gambling instead of messing around with people’s search engines, then they would have one less problem to worry about.
