The Story

Brazilian President Michel Temer has signified his support to gambling expansion bills that will be passed by legislators, provided that he will stay in his seat.

Say what now?

Temer is currently facing an important vote that will make or break his career. The Brazilian legislature is set to vote on whether the president should stand trial on charges of racketeering and obstruction of justice.

He’ll survive, for sure.

Well, Temer is expected to survive the vote, which would require a two-thirds majority of the Chamber’s 513 deputies to send him to trial. Also, with 185 deputies currently involved in corruption probes, it would really be hypocritical to send a member of their kind packing.

Impeaching Temer would hinder recent progress.

Last week saw the inaugural meeting of Brazil’s Chamber of Deputies’ new parliamentary front for gambling regulation, which has set a goal of approving long-stalled legislation that would authorize the launch of land-based casinos and other gambling options, including as-yet undetermined online gambling products.

Legalizing gambling will mean a windfall for Brazil.

Studies indicated that the Brazilian gaming market, with the legalization of all modalities, casinos, jogo do bicho, bingos, video-bingos, video-games, sports betting and online games, have the potential to raise US$ 18.5 billion gross or about US$ 5.5 billion per year in taxes.

Takeaway

With Temer enjoying enough support to make him stay in power, the legalization of gambling in Brazil stays on track. The said move will provide the government a new source of revenue it desperately needs.
