The Story

The United States government has become $48.23 million richer after Ross Ulbricht let go of his claims from the sale of Bitcoins in the now-defunct marketplace Silk Road which he created.

Fill me in on the details.

In a court order last Sept. 29, U.S. District Judge Katherine Forrest announced that Ulbricht has withdrawn his claims to the Bitcoins. His withdrawal would mean that the proceeds of the sale will be forfeited to the U.S. government.

How did he end up behind bars?

Ulbricht ran the website under the name Dread Pirate Roberts from 2011 until 2013, when he was caught red-handed by a law enforcement sting in a San Francisco coffee shop. He was found guilty by the Manhattan jury on seven charges, including drug trafficking, money laundering and a whole host of other cyber crimes.

Ulbrecht is ordered by the court to produce more money.

While certainly the $48 million is not a drop in the bucket, Ulbrecht still have to produce more money as he was ordered by the Court to forfeit $183 million. The forfeited amount, "shall constitute full and complete satisfaction of the United States’ claims in this Action against Ulbricht, and for any and all other civil claims that could have been brought against Ulbricht in relation to the facts alleged in the Complaint,” according to the court order.

Takeaway

Ulbrecht's illegal means to procure Bitcoin  serves a precautionary tale to everyone. People should engage in legitimate platforms to buy, sell, and transfer Bitcoin or else face a lifetime in jail.
