The Story

Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe will reportedly call for a snap election, a move that will ensure that the his Liberal Democratic Party will maintain its majority at the House of Representatives and will spell further delays to the Integrated Resorts (IR) bill.

But why?

Abe is making a strategic political gamble here that will ultimately favor his party. The prime minister is taking advantage of two circumstances: first, LDP’s soaring poll numbers that can be attributed to its response on North Korea’s missile tests; and second, the fractured leadership of LDP’s chief rival Democratic Party.

It won’t be the first time that Abe will do it.

Three years ago, Abe called for a similar early vote and handed the LDP to an improved majority in the House of Representatives.

The move will endanger the chances of the IR Implementation bill.

Dissolving the legislature now would disrupt plans to pass the Integrated Resorts Implementation bill, which will lay down the rules that will guide casino regulation, this year. The legislation for casino regulation in Japan has been approved last year.

Takeaway

The snap election will likely kill any chance for the IR Implementation Bill on making progress this year, further delaying any prospect of having casinos in the Land of the Rising Sun anytime soon.
