Every day... I'm just grinding and believing in myself that I can make this happen again. And to do it feels great.

  Crown braces for darker times

The Story

Chinese authorities have indicted 18 Crown Resorts staffers, including three Australians, almost eight months after they were arrested for alleged gambling crimes.

Walk me through what happened.

According to a disclosure of Crown to the Australian Stock Exchange, the detained employees “have now been charged with offences related to the promotion of gambling and their cases have been referred to the Baoshan District Court.” The 18 staffers were rounded up in October 2016 in a “Duanlian” operation.

What is a “Duanlian” operation?

Duanlian is a sting operation against gambling-related activities. It reportedly aims to uncover personal and financial links of Chinese high rollers from foreign casinos.

How did Crown became a target of Chinese authorities?

With gaming and its explicit advertising being illegal in China, authorities have become strict in monitoring casino operators who have been attracting high rollers from the mainland to gamble overseas. However, despite previous warnings, Crown allegedly attempted to circumvent Chinese rules by simply packaging tour activities as resort instead of casinos. Thus, resulting to the arrests.

Takeaway

Crown is now facing the consequences of spitting on the faces of Chinese authorities.
