Anything to protect the Disney ‘magic’

The Story

Disney Worldwide Services has shelled out a total of $1.15 million for “Voters in Charge”—a political committee that is seeking to limit the expansion of gambling in Florida.

Disney is making it rain!

New data on Florida state’s Division of Elections website showed that Disney Worldwide Services cut a check for $500,000 to the political committee “Voters in Charge” in July. It has previously contributed $250,000 to the committee last April. In total, the media giant has already given $1.15 million to the committee.

Voters in Charge wants to do what exactly?

It wants to rain down on any prospect of expanding casino gambling in the Sunshine state. The group said that it aims “to give Florida voters, not politicians, the exclusive right to approve or disapprove casino gambling.”

So why is Disney supporting this initiative?

To keep its profit, Captain Obvious! Disney believes that casino-style gambling will spoil the family-friendly vibe that Florida gives off, especially among tourists that visit the corporation’s theme parks. Remember that Walt Disney World Resort, the largest and most-visited vacation resort in the world, is located in Lake Buena Vista, Florida.

Voters in Charge needs to collect 766,200 to put the initiative to a vote.

The initiative already has 151,476 valid signatures at the moment, but collecting those signatures prove to be a major expense for the committee. So this is where Disney comes in handy. According to government figures, nearly all of the Voters in Charge’s $943,858 expenditures have gone towards petition gathering and verification.

Takeaway

Should the initiative makes it onto the 2018 general election—and passes—Florida voters will have the exclusive right to decide whether to authorize casino gambling in the state. And that could mean less casinos in the state in the future.
