The Story

Famed sports bettorBilly Walters has been fined $10 million and sentenced to five years in federal prison for insider trading.

Give me a background on what happened.

The sports bettor was convicted on charges of securities fraud, wire fraud and conspiracy for his role in an insider trading scheme in April. The scheme involved a series of trades in 2016 involving Dean Foods based on inside information given to Walters by Dean’s former chairman Thomas Davis. Walters raked in $32m in profits while skirting $11m in losses.

Walters was mocked by the judge.

During his sentencing, US District Judge P. Kevin Castel called Walters “a cheater and a criminal, and not a very clever one.” He even said that Walters’ scheme was “amateurishly simple,” in part due to a detailed paper trail that identified Walters and Davis as the perpetrators.

The court isn’t keen on lessening his sentence.

The SEC’s announcement could bring an end to the altcoin era. Altcoins, for those who may have been living under a rock, are the alternative cryptocurrencies which were launched after the success of Bitcoin. Etherium is an example of an altcoin.

Takeaway

For the longest time, Walters was able to outrun the feds as they tried to bring him down for sports betting. But the feds finally caught up with him when he was charged and sentenced for insider trading.
