Liverpool supporters came into this season not expecting much at all. They had owners that they hated, a manager who, although he took Bodog-sponsored Fulham to a Europa League final, just seems too nice to do anything other than greet people coming into church. Then there was the misfiring star striker.
Fast-forward six months and we could be back in the early 90s such is the optimism on Merseyside – and it’s not because a load of people have moved into the area with new cars either.
Luis Suarez put pay to rumours of a controversial debut as he was credited with the second goal of last night’s 2-0 win over Stoke. Their other signing, Andy Carroll, somehow managed to not get in a scuffle while being introduced to the crowd. This was even after someone arranged free comps for two of his ex-girlfriends and gave him ten bottles of Newcy Brown beforehand.
Gary McGibbon, from StanJames.com, was equally as excited as Liverpool’s fan base at the news that the Merseysiders are back on track, and said: “StanJames.com have slashed the odds on Liverpool to achieve a top six Premier League finish this season after their 2-0 home defeat of Stoke City last night.
“After Luis Suarez made a dream start for Liverpool, scoring his team’s second goal late in the game, punters have gobbled up the 5/4 we were offering until this morning.
“We have now been forced to cut Liverpool to 8/11 as it is clear the betting public now believe Liverpool are a fairly good thing to achieve a top six finish under the new regime at Anfield.”
There you have it then. Liverpool are looking like making it back to the promised land of the top four if everything goes to plan, Suarez didn’t bite anyone, and Carroll refrained from fighting. Good night all round.
