Who Chelsea will appoint as their new boss has been the most anticipated job choice since Alan Sugar began the search for his next Apprentice. The wait could be over though as a number of bookmakers suspended betting on Porto boss André Villas-Boas, or AVB for short, becoming the next man to take on the poisoned chalice at Stamford Bridge. He does come with some pedigree though and at £13.2m, he’d better be bloody good!
It’s rumored that he will earn around the same £4.4m that Jose Mourinho first garnered for himself when he arrived. Boas also worked under the Special One at the Bridge. Would it be outlandish to suggest that Jose has simply put a mask on as he’s so desperate to get back to the Bridge? Given that the time zones aren’t too far apart from Madrid to London then you could see the Special One jetting between the two only stopping to don his AVB suit.
In all seriousness, if Chelsea have got their man and any of Porto’s stars follow him over then the title looks like a real possibility for the side next season. A front three of Didier Drogba, Hulk and Falcao would be as fearsome as anything else that the rest of Europe could muster. Let alone any other Premier League side. Add into the mix that they somehow manage to nab Luka Modric from Tottenham Hotspur to replace the aging Frank Lampard and the Champions League could also be a distant possibility.
The similarities with Mourinho are remarkable. From the unbeaten home record of the two coaches to the proven trophy winning exploits you’d imagine that AVB’s Chelsea will be a shoo-in for the title.
