We are still weeks away from the biggest game in football, the Super Bowl, but many sportsbooks are already looking to the potential of the next big thing. With the XFL about to rise from the grave, sportsbooks are preparing to take wagers on the new league, which will begin on February 8.
There are already a number of states who have legalized betting on the league, which is attempting to reboot after their initial endeavor failed nearly two decades ago. The league is hoping that this time they will have greater success after learning from their initial attempt.
Because it is football, many are jumping on board to offer wagers on the league. In a statement by Jason Scott, Vice-President of Trading at ROAR Digital, he stated, “We’re definitely interested in applying to bet on the XFL. We’re of the belief that the American sports betting public has an appetite for even more football, and that the XFL will help sate that demand.”
DraftKings has already made it clear that they are on board. They intend to offer the XFL games throughout the season. In a post on their Twitter feed, the company stated, “We can confirm that we will have XFL contests this season and that those contests will begin on 2/8. We’ll be sure to provide additional details as we get closer to that date. Thanks for your patience in the meantime.”
The XFL is looking to make this a real go this time, and they have taken some of the most important steps to make that a reality. One of those is to reach an agreement with Genius Sports, which will help protect the league from potential issues that arise from wagers being placed on any sport.
The deal provides a “comprehensive integrity program.” Jeffrey Pollack, President, and COO of the XFL, explained, “Sports betting is growing rapidly in the U.S., and we are gearing up to be a good citizen and thoughtful participant in the marketplace. Our alliance with Genius Sports is an important first step and foundational element.”
One state has opted not to allow wagers on the league – Delaware. Delaware Lottery Director Vernon Kirk explained, “As of now, we’re kind of reticent to jump into that because some of the rules are kind of crazy.” He added that the unpredictability of the league is the primary reason for the decision.
The XFL will include eight teams: Dallas, Houston, Los Angeles, New York, St. Louis, Seattle, Tampa Bay, and Washington. The championship game will be played in April.
