Premier League legend Alan Shearer has joined Coral as their first football ambassador in a season long deal.
Alan Shearer is the latest high profile former sports star to join UK bookie Coral in an ambassadorial role. The former England, Southampton, Blackburn and Newcastle forward joins as their first football ambassador. He has signed a season long deal.
Coral have picked up a gem. Shearer has been the lead pundit at Match of the Day since 2006, and is not afraid to speak his mind. He will write a weekly blog for Coral called ‘Shearer Says…’ and in his first blog post, written yesterday, he has already singled out Louis van Gaal and Brendan Rodgers as two men who need to produce results in 2015/16 or suffer the consequences.
Coral PR Director Simon Clare called Shearer, ‘One of the finest footballers of his generation’ and promised that his blog would be a, ‘Not-to-be-missed read.’
Shearer is a former England national team captain, who scored 30 goals in 63 appearances for his country, including five in the 1996 European Championships where he finished as the tournament’s top scorer. He scored 283 goals in 559 appearances for Southampton, Blackburn and Newcastle, including a record 260 in 441 Premier League appearances. After the 1996 Euros Newcastle paid a then £15m world record fee to sign him from Blackburn Rovers, famously snubbing Man Utd manager Sir Alex Ferguson at the 11th hour.
“It’s such a great sport and there’s never any shortage of controversy or major talking points so it’s going to be fun airing my views on a weekly basis through this blog,” said Shearer.
It’s not the first time that Shearer has been affiliated with a gambling company. In 2011, he signed a two-year deal to act as the Ambassador in Asia for sports betting site Dafabet.com.
Shearer’s signing comes a week after TitanBet announced a season long deal to bring the quill of Shearer’s former England teammate John Barnes into the company fold as a Brand Ambassador. Last year, former England forward Michael Owen signed on to do the same job for BetVictor.
