As news breaks of Genting Malaysia Bhd’s decision to build a new luxury hotel, and two condominiums, in the heart of Miami, a new story arises fresh from the afterburn. The Malaysian mammoth may not be able to add a casino to their existing Miami infrastructure, but the rules are somewhat different just 53 miles off the East Coast. There you will find the tiny island of Bimini; one of the 700 such things that make up the English speaking, independent country, of the Bahamas; a place where casinos are welcomed with sun tanned open arms.
Genting are thought to be paying around $20 million for the ability to open Resorts World Bimini Bay on the existing site of Bimini Bay Resort and Marina. The deal will also see Genting invest upwards of $100 million in improved air and sea transportation into an island made famous for its rum-running trade during the prohibition, and a source of interest in the famed search for the Fountain of Youth by legendary explorer Juan Ponce de Leon.
The unveiling of the new enterprise is planned for December, with 10-000 square feet containing table games, slot machines and sports betting. It is believed the design will be similar to that used in the Genting casinos that exist in London. Genting’s move into the island will be a welcomed one by the 2,000 residents, as it will no doubt boost the local economy.
