It’s no secret that MGM Resorts International belongs in a highly competitive business of constant one-upmanship. But even if competition is rampant in the industry, one of the world’s leading global hospitality companies still has a soft side to it.
No more was that more evident than the company’s recent announcement that its employees have pledged $4.7 million to a number of nonprofit organizations and programs serving the communities in Nevada, Michigan, and Mississippi, states where MGM Resorts has operations on.
The multi-million dollar pledge is part of the 10th anniversary of MGM Resort Foundation. Since its inception in 2002, the MGM Resorts Foundation, the philanthropic arm of MGM Resorts, has raised nearly $50 million and has supported more than 2,000 charities with the focus of improving the lives of children and the youth, as well as putting emphasis on public education, health care, hunger relief and mental health and substance abuse.
In a press release announcing the foundation’s 10th anniversary, MGM Resorts chairman and CEO Jim Murren underscored the company’s continued commitment to provide assistance to the communities from where it operates.
“We earnestly believe that the success of our Company is directly linked to the quality of the communities in which we operate,” he said, “and there is no better way to celebrate the 10th anniversary of the MGM Resorts Foundation, its works and the generous support of our employees, than to personally thank the nonprofit agencies who work diligently to improve our communities.”
As part of the foundation’s anniversary, a host of MGM executives did unexpected rounds to a number of non-profit agencies in their areas of operations to deliver donations, as well as announce programs that resulted from grants the Foundation has given out throughout the years.
One of these areas, Clark County in Nevada, reciprocated the foundation’s generosity by announcing July 17 as “MGM Resorts Foundation Day”.
It’s not exactly an enthralling honor in itself, but the gesture is reflective of the appreciation these communities have for a company that, while involved in a highly competitive business, still remembers to keep its feet on the ground to give back to those in need.
