If the English FA was trying to create a better image then this weekend has well and truly blown it out of the water.
This comes as the two players widely considered to be the team’s best stars were both involved in separate events that have courted much controversy – one on the field, the other off it.
On the field, Manchester United striker Wayne Rooney lost himself for a moment and decided that he was actually a WWE superstar. His finisher, the forearm smash, was so realistic that referee Mark Clattenburg was seen after the game with a piece of cardboard that had “Rooney 3:16” scrawled on it.
Retrospective action will likely be taken against the scouse striker and it would see him miss tomorrow night’s clash with champions Chelsea.
Their opponents are also embroiled in quite the crisis.
This weekend reports have it that defender Ashley Cole shot and wounded a work experience student that was working at the club’s training ground. In an apparent accident, the student was shot and still hadn’t fully recovered two days later from an infection to the wound.
Local police are now involved with the incident that is another blot in the copybook of one of the national team’s most despised players.
You can imagine the situation now…said student takes the piss out of Cole on one too many occasions and the jibes were too much. Ashley’s obviously been watching HBO specials on the newly unveiled Sky Atlantic channel and thinks he’s part of Avon Barksdale’s crew.
All we can suggest now is that he lets Calvin give him a lesson in how to fire a gun; otherwise, he’s never going to be able to defend himself properly
