Australia appoints new PM a day after gambling ban is upheld

One of the final decisions of Kevin Rudd’s government was to ignore a report it commissioned which recommended lifting the country’s eight-year online gambling ban. Yesterday Rudd paid the political price and was hounded out of office. Rudd’s demise probably had more to do with his unpopular Resources Super Profits Tax, but if his replacement Julia Gillard plans to scrap that tax, and replace it with a new money generator, why not show a bit of chutzpah and replace it with a betting tax in a newly regulated liberalised betting market?
