Las Vegas Review Journal city editor Warren Bates died on Friday, when a train sideswiped his car in what appears to have been a suicide. Witnesses told authorities that Bates was seen traveling on Route 66 and pulling ahead of the train before driving his car onto the tracks and stopping. Bates, an accomplished journalist and photographer, was also a keen poker player who wrote a first-person account of his unsuccessful attempt to beat the big guns in the 2005 World Series of Poker, writing: “In order to live, you have to be willing to die.” Read more.
