The Story
After listening to its stakeholders, the Irish government is now considering allowing a tax-free turnover of €2.5m ($2.8m) a year. This was a complete 180-degree turn from the proposed doubling of betting taxes—a proposal that was opposed by small-time businesses and bettors. The effect of the tax-free turnover is that less tax will be imposed on small-time operators, while those with deep pockets should expect to pay more. However, businesses cannot pop their champagnes just yet as the proposed turnover suggests the government would actually take in less taxes as a result.
