Former China Welfare Lottery deputy director Feng Lizhi has been sentenced to 17 years in prison on charges of corruption. Lizhi, who admitted last year that he took bribes worth RMB5.8m, reportedly contributed to the government’s loss in lottery revenue amounting to RMB160m. He was supposed to serve 18 years in prison—12 for bribery and six for abuse of office—but he was able to deduct one year in exchange of paying a penalty of RMB1m. As karma would have it, Lizhi will not be able live through his jail sentence as he is suffering from advanced lung cancer.
